Intermittent starting problem

I've got a 1987 F150, 74K miles, 6 cyl. that has had a problem starting a couple times in the past month. Turning the key, I hear nothing, not even a click. The radio, lights, accessories work fine, so the battery appears like it's OK. My son finally got it started both times with the transmission in neutral rather than park. Sounds like it's somewhere between the key and the battery. Ideas??

I know this sounds pretty basic, but check and clean all of your ground connections.

Thanks for your suggestion. My son did install an amplifier and more powerful speakers a few months ago. Maybe one of the grounds is bad.
