I have somem extra back-up lights on my tow package hooked up straight up to the ones that are stock on the truck. I got to thinking the other day that this could casuse a few problems. I figured out that there has to be a way for me to connect these lights to the trailer harness for the trailer lights. How would i connect these lights to the trailer harness?

 

If they are a low volts you will be OK. I would think no more than 55 watts. Run the left one to the left one on the tail lights and the right one to the right tail lights. You should be ok. Good Luck

I'm not sure all trailer harness connectors include a back-up lamp circuit. I know the 4pin one on mine does NOT. If you have the towing package and a 5pin (or more) connector it might be available to you there. I admiit I'm not sure.

BUT (directly) adding high wattage lights to existing factory wiring is not recommended.

Two 55 watt lamps draw an additional 9 amps.

You are reducing the safety margin designed into the truck's wiring.

Look for threads labled similar to "Under vehicle lighting" or "Dome light in camper shell" for more information about adding a relay to supply the additional current for such auxiliary lighting.
