I agree with the rabbit method, but driving like a sane human being has a merit as well. I routinely cruise at 80 mph on the 75 mph freeways here. Arizona DPS will pull over for 82-83 in a 75 zone, complete with citation. Funny thing is, they'll usually let you go 76-77 in a 65 zone without a ticket. Sometimes I'll push 85 in the 75 zones, but any faster and they seem to get really pissed off (large fines). I guess I need to grow some larger cahones to keep up with the rabbits going 95 in a 75...

I use my CB and watch the truckers. If the semis are going slow, then there's a cop somewhere around. I can get on the CB and find out where some smokies are too

 

You respect him for not giving you a ticket. Does this mean you would be cussing an officer who was doing his job and gave you a ticket for going almost 20 mph over the limit? If the limit was 50mph, it was not exactly the wide open spaces.

You were the lawbreaker! You obviously do not respect laws that you don't like to follow. And you don't respect an officer for enforcing the law that might keep some speeder from killing your family?
Now, I don't claim that I never exceed the limit, but I never do in town. And out on the interstates I am content to keep it around 78 and let the others get the tickets. Doing 85 would only get me home a few minutes quicker on a three hour drive. And if I DID get a ticket, I wouldn't blame it on my radar detector OR the officer who stops me while doing his job of trying to keep people from getting killed.

When the law is selectively enforced, it is a joke. Take the interstate between San Antonio and Houston... traffic routinely runs 85... with no problems. It is pure stupidity for a police officer to be stopping every thousandth victim... shooting fish in a barrel. They have not improved safety, they have simply enhanced ticket revenue and quotas. Quite a few cities in Texas have been banned from writing speeding tickets because of their abuse.

I am wholly in favor of issuing speeding tickets in unsafe conditions... neighborhoods... in the rain... high speed differentials... but I am wholly opposed to issuing citations just because you can.

When you can demonstrate that their is no abuse of the speeding laws on the part of law enforcement, then maybe I'll revisit the issue.

 

That's more than a bit contradictory! If they were truly trying to enhance revenue, they would be stopping one speeders one right after the other, as quickly as they could write tickets. Stopping every thousandth speeder wouldn't do any thing for their "cause" and I seriously can't see an officer sitting at the side of the road counting " 998.....999.... Okay! here we go!!!"

They can't issue citations if you are not speeding or otherwise breaking the law. Why is it abuse if they are enforcing the law?
If you don't speed, you don't get a ticket. I don't understand any other line of thinking.

 

Yes Mr Kenster I would respect that officer even if I had recieved a ticket as long as he acted accordingly.

To all law enforcement officers here. Want to loose respect ----just travel down the roads at 20 mph over the limit and whats even worse turn on your blue lights when approaching a red light just so you don't have to wait like the rest of us. I know in rare cases you may be responding to a call but not constantly. I would hate to guess how many times this happens daily. I have traveled to the Sturgis, SD motorcycle rally several times and noticed the South Dakota State Police conducting so called "safety inspections" just so they can rummage through a truck or motorcycle and it's contents. It only takes one or two cases like this and some people loose respect for all police.I'm not trying to stir anything just replying to the "respect issue"

 

The bottom line is you must know what type of radar the police use on the road you are on. Common roads that you take all the time, you should know who uses instant on & who uses Kband.

When on an unfamiliar road or hwy, you need to have a piegon in front of you about .25 -.50 miles. He gets tagged & your detector alerts you with time to slow down. I use a V1 in my vette, and a cobra in my 250. The v1 went nuts on me on an unfamiliar road I hit the brakes HARD as I was doing 130mph - I saw nothing around and slowed to cruise @ 75 - 80 - 10 minutes later a trooper was on me from behind and wrote me for 97 in a 55 OUCH still waiting for my court date - 11pt voilation

Hey guys, what about those units that claim to cloak your vehicle and screw up the fuzz's radar? I haven't tried one but they say you will be as invisible as a Klingon Bird of Prey!

I just ordered an escort 8500 for the F-150, got a Bro-deal at $210. I'd like to put my old detector back in my Bronco. I've had an escort 4600 for like 3 years. It has saved me more tickets than I can count. The secret to using a detector is being one with it, and knowing exactly what it is telling you.

As another of "the fuzz", I can at least say that my jurisdiction does not generally stop until you are 15 over.

As far as Laser goes, the advantage to police using laser is that the cone or signal beam which is bounced off of your car is very very small compared to radar. Radar sends out a very broad beam. The units which are mounted on the dashboard have to bounce a signal off of the road, side of the road, trees, etc to get a reading for the police car's speed (used in the addition/subtractino equation to figure out YOUR speed). At the same time the unit is bouncing a signal off of your car to get a reading. This means that the beam sent out by radar (K, Ka, X) is usually wider than the road on which you are driving. Laser is only sent out for a burst usually less than a second and is a concentrated cone often less than a foot or two in diameter. To get a reading, it has to be bounced off of a surface which is not glass... which happens to be where you place your detector, right? Glass will not return a laser signal, so the crosshairs are usually aimed at your bumper. The reason I point all of this out is that if you are thinking that you can use your laser detector to tell when somebody else gets popped, you are probably not going to be very lucky. Once you are good with a laser unit, you should be able to pick one car out of a pack and not set off any other detectors...

My personal preference is the Bel series... They have front rear, and the best features. I.e mute, clicking, etc.

My personal advice is do what I did and buy a CB. That way you can detect the traffic units up to 50 miles away when you talk to opposite traffic. Got me through 5 years of driving back and forth to college every weekend.

Before you hate me too much, I will say that on my shift, we are usually too busy to do a whole lot of traffic. I tend to look for the people who drive like idiots. These are usually people who tend to think that since they drive x many hundred miles a week or whatever for business they are better drivers and can weave, tailgate, speed, and defy the laws of physics. It's all about driving safe for conditions.

1 in 1,000. Hmmm.. Plano population ~200,000.. = 200 citations?? I was quoted 1,100 citation in a single week. Probably why they have crisp flat panel displays @ the municipal court..

My last ticket was 3 years ago. Clocked @ 97 heading to aTm. Only day that year that I didn't have my trusty Bel 980. (Used Bel 945i) Big difference in sensitivity level. Paid dearly for it..

I have never ever seen my radar warning go off! (Unless I happen to drive by a neon sign shop )

Well worth the $250 I paid for the 980!
