Blowing #6 fuse and more..plz HELP!

Hey guys my 2000 ford F150 5.4 started with no cluster lights then I see my headlights won't turn off when I turn the headlamp switch. I checked all fuses and had to pull one to get my lights to turn off. I replaced #6 fuse (20amp) and everything worked for like 2 min and blew again. I put a 30 amp in there and it all worked but my taillights and I could smell electrical burn coming from the taillights so I immediately pulled it. I have read it could be headlamp switch but not sure and don't wanna spend money unless I have to..any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

If the burning smell is coming from the taillights, you have a short back there. I think chasing relays and the headlight switch is looking in the wrong area.

Cole, I moved your thread to the Electrical Section. You might get more help here. Good luck!

Cole, I'm deleting the additional threads you're starting on this subject. Do you know what the #6 fuse protects? From your description, and as glc suggested, it sounds like you have a partial short in the taillight circuit. I'd start by checking all the wiring in that area. If you find worn insulation or some other fault, correct it. Then, see if you can replace the fuse with a 20 Amp one. If it works, you've probably corrected the problem.

Unless you have a multimeter, I doubt there is much else you can do on your own.

And Cole, please don't start multiple posts on the same subject. It can cause confusion and lead to responses that will waste your time or lead you in the wrong direction.

I dont know if this is the issue here but i have seen many taillight issues caused by tapping into the wiring for trailer plugs. Is any wiring dangling beneath the bumper where easily damaged?

Does the truck have autolamps ?

Do you have the trailer tow package ?
- 7 pin & 4 pin or just the 4 pin ?
- Is it factory, or added after the fact ? ( does it go to a single large connector on the frame rail under the spare tire )

fuse #6 in the Power Distrubution Box ( engine compartment ) should be a 15A per the PDF version of the owners manual from Ford.
- Not sure why there was a 20A in there.
