Overdrive "off" Indicator Flashing
'98 F150 4WD with 24,000 miles, normal use. The Overdrive "OFF" indicator on the end of the gearshift lever started flashing at about a 1 hertz rate. Transmission still seems to be working OK (if I ignore the shudder
), fluid level is OK, no burnt smell, not excessively hot, and I can still turn the overdrive off and on. What is this flashing indicator trying to tell me? Is it safe to drive?

there is a TCM code in the ecu. the o/d light flashes when the electronic's in the tranny are having trouble reading and sending info to the ecu. it might be wise to take the truck in to your local dealer. it just might need the "P R N D L" switch re adjusted or replaced.... GOOD LUCK!

Hi XXLR8
I agree with bigwhite. If that OD light continues to flash, it probably has thrown a trouble code.
Same thing happened to me, except almost immediately after my tranny started shifting really bad between 3rd & OD, the OD light (TCL) started flashing.
Under warranty, took it in etc,...........Yep, had to rebuild tranny underwarranty.
If your still under warranty, take it in. If not, have the OBDII scanned to see if trouble code thrown, then go from there.
You can try resetting the PCM, it may or maynot clear? Of course, if tranny bad, that want fix it.
Good luck. OT

OK, first update. I had the truck diagnosed on computer by a friend who runs his own shop (not a Ford dealer). He said it didn't look good, there was a very real possibility of a transmission meltdown brewing. He says that he sees far too many Ford trucks with transmission troubles.
I go to see my local Ford dealership. I tell them that my 98 F150 with only 25,000 miles is acting up, appears to be transmission related. They punch in the truck VIN and confirm that the 3 year warranty has JUST expired (less than a week). I ask them whether Ford will honor a warranty repair, as the truck hasn't even run enough miles for the first transmission fluid change. I get referred to the service manager, he says no dice, the warranty is up, nothing he can do about that. I tell him that there is a rather lengthy list of TSBs issued on that year/model of truck so it must be a common problem. He says that doesn't mean anything, that Ford issues literally thousands of TSBs and it doesn't mean a problem is widespread. BUT.... he tells me there's a program (PL5???) where Ford will pick up 75% of the cost, I pick up the other 25%. He advised me that I should try to take it to the selling dealership if I can, and they will pick up 12.5%, leaving me with 12.5% of the repair cost. I inform him that I was standing in the selling dealership. He said great, you'll save a little money then. When I started making the drop off/repair appointment with the maintenance scheduler, he came back over and said that I may also want to consider the "PL7" plan. I laughed and asked what that entailed. He said that in the event I needed a new transmission, I would pay $495, and I would basically have a warranty for the next 75,000 miles or three years. If anything happened with the engine or drive train, I would simply pay a $50 deductible to have it repaired. The truck goes in Tuesday morning for diagnosis. He's gonna call me when they have a diagnosis to determine which route I wanna take. I also asked about them about the door crack. He asked if my door was cracked, I said no. He said then there is nothing to look at or do. I told him that I was under the impression that Ford has recognized the problem, and they not only are repairing the doors that have cracks, but doing some sort of metal support behind the door skin to prevent the cracks from occurring. He said he wasn't sure about that, but he'd refer it to the body shop to have it done if that were the case. I also asked them to listen to the "rattling" of the catalytic converter to see if they need to drain the collection of "bb's" out of it, another TSB issued by Ford.
Does anyone have experience or first hand knowledge of these two "programs" that he referred to (PL5 and PL7)?
I'll update the post as news transpires. It's bulletin boards like these that are priceless when it comes to finding out the REAL deal on vehicles and such.
