2012 f150 4pin to 7 pin no tow package, myths, truths, compendium of information

Another success story here! Thanks for the awesome instructions on how to do this! I saved a ton of money. I did this on a 2014 F150 XLT with no tow package. Here are some pics of where I spliced into the harness under the hood above the driver's side wheel well. My truck had the TBC plug right behind the coin tray in the dash, it was found plugged into it. I took it to a dealer after all the install was complete and now it works like a charm! Gives readouts and information right on my gage display next to spedometer.

All you have to do is go to your dealer and ask them to flash for TBC, most if not all should be able to do it. Takes 5 mins, usually costs around $50. Some charge more, some will do it for free.

nice job on your install. I have a question if you don't mind. What did you do with the grey/brown wire for reverse lights? Did you splice that somewhere else? i noticed you only ran 2 wires to the back, just wondering what happened to the third.
Did anyone install any of the other parts that come along with the tow package such as the engine oil cooler?

Can you do this mod even if you have the regular cluster. I have the cluster in the first picture and want to do this but not sure if it will work and can't find any information on it. I have the cluster in the first picture of the link

I see that this thread is kinda old but as someone who has done this to their truck I will add my experience. I have an 2012 reg cab STX that came without towing. I purchased the correct wiring harness from ford and replaced everything from the front back. You just remove one harness and put in the new one. I did not have to drop the gas tank. A few of the connections are kinda hard to see but it can be done. My truck was new at the time and I did not want to splice anything.
