So are alarms worth it?

I have a set of subs and they just sit in the backseat of my supercrew and have been there for a good 4 mos. I have had people freak out and ask you dont have an alarm?! Subs are on seat because they sounded like crap when they were under the seat just in case your wondering. I have always felt if someone wants something bad enough they're gonna get it regardless if I have an alarm or not. That being said, how do you guys feel about them? I have an 02 truck and it just honks when I lock it but I have never heard it go off. If it does go off, what are some things that trigger it ?
My take is, at least with stereos most vehicles have plug and play wiring harness adapters (although I've hit my first one that that's not true), but with alarms they're going directly into your wiring harness, which freaks me out.
Never had an aftermarket alarm, but have been broken into because my powered sub was visible. My strategy now is to always have a detachable faceplate unit, and take it with me all the time, hide everything else, never leave anything of value visible in the vehicle, and turn it way down before I get close to home.
Not sure why the subs didn't sound good under the seat, would be curious what the difference was.

Go with a viper 600 HF/HE. crooks are gonna go for the easy target and viper has a program that if they steal your truck with their alarm in it they will give you 5000.00.
Better safe than sorry. I won't have a vehicle without an alarm. It also helps with your insurance rates and resale value.
