I would take a SWAG that the transfer case to PCM circuit is having an issue, or the plates in the transfer case are causing the flashing condition.

Huge SWAG that the PCM to instrument cluster is having an issue, but I would expect other symptoms ( something akin to crank no starts, false theft indicators, etc ).

Start by checking the fuses for the 4WD system with a meter on both pins, when installed.
F11, F29, F30 and F111. These are hot all the time, and regardless of the key position, you should have + VDC on both pins when installed.

The other side of these are at the PCM, Connector C175B, pins 12 & 13

Check the connector on the transfer case for corrosion or dirt / oil clean if necessary.

These are the starting points that I see looking at Cell 34 for the 4WD system
