solenoid wiring fiasco: HELP
solenoid wiring fiasco: HELP
Been trying to track down an amp draw problem. Pulled all fuses and no solution.
Crawled under the truck and looked at the solenoid that is perched on the starter. Had starter replaced last fall. Solenoid has three posts and these wires connected to them:
1. goes to braided wire that runs up to starter
2. red wire
3. Thick black wire running up to ????
Then I noticed another eye ring connector just dangling...connected to nothing!!!!
Where is this thick black wire supposed to go? Looks like it was inadvertantly left off of one of the sol. terminals when the starter was replaced, but maybe it belongs somewhere else...I just don't know where.
Thanks for your help.

There are two connections made to the starter solenoid. A small one that attaches to the S-terminal which feeds power to the solenoid and bigger one that attaches to the B+ stud. The metal strap connects the starter solenoid to the starter motor on the Motor or M-terminal and is made at the parts factory.
There is a large ground wire that is attached to the starter motor frame and should go directly back to the battery, mounted off the starter mounting bolt. That is my guess what the dangling wire is, un-connected ground wire.
If you are still pulling current, disconnect the alternator B+ cable, sometimes they will pull draw.
