engine wont crank
engine wont crank
Sometimes i have problems starting my f150 5,4 1998. When turning the ignitionkey i hear one clic from the starterrelay and nothing more happens. I have checked wiring from battery to the starterengine. All seems okay.
I have an automatic transmission. I think the problem may be some sort of relay on the gearbox which should prevent the truck from starting when not i "P". My experience is, that it has some positive effect, when i move the gearshifter a little but not out of parking mode.
If i am right, where is this relay located. Can it be adjusted or is it broken
Any input on this issue will be much appreciated.

It is not a relay , it is the DTR ( digital Transmission Range ) Sensor, or a multi contact switch.
It is on the driver's side of the trans.
Before moving it, make sure the reverse lamps work correctly ( when in reverse ) and see if the truck will start in neutral.
If this is the case, it most likely a issue with the gear shift linkage itself.

The DTR ? It seems to be the most likely suspect in what you are seeing.
The question is, is it due to the DTR itself or due to the shift linkage. That is why I suggested checking the reverse lamps when in reverse ( the same movement ) and if you have a no crank no start issue, press and hold the brake pedal, shift into neutral, and try to start again. If you have to play with it there, and the reverse lamps are finicky that would tell me the DTR is slightly shifted one way or the other.
