Question

I need a little clarification on this. It disables the door chime when the key is still in the ignition but in the off position with the door open, correct?

Thanks.

Thanks Chuck...I just did this mod and it works just like you said... remove three phillips screws, cut and tape purple/black wire, put screws back in and Voila!, it's done. Took me about five mins (I'm slow).

Question.... Why not disconnect the connector at the end of the black/purple wire?....

1. Remove lower steering column cover.
2. Lift top steering column cover a little. 3. Release the plastic clip on connector with the black/purple to disconnect it from the key switch.
4. Electrical tape the connector a couple times(since the contact is exposed).
5. Reassemble to steering column covers stowing the taped connector inside.

Worked best for me.

** of course this only affects the door open with the key in the OFF position...

Anyone have a schematic to solve the door open with the key in the ACC. or ON position?
It would be nice to keep the lights on, door ajar light features working, but cut out the bell. Haynes manual schematic doesn't even include the black/purple wire.

Question

Unless I am way off in left field, all you need to do is turn the key to the on position and it will stop chiming after about 4 or 5 chimes.

The only way I have heard to stop the chime all together is to take the GEM module apart and un-solder one of the speaker wires. This doesn't effect any of the GEM functions, just stops the sound.

I Finally Got It! Just take the latch in the door and push it up like the door is closed and the chime stops! You can see the small metal "point" on the actual latch that actuates the switch. When you are done playing, Washing, Waxing, Whatever simply raise the door handle and the latch pops down about half way then it is simply a matter of pulling it down the rest of the way so you can close the door!

so i bet theres a wire in the door that i can cut so i wouldn't have to do that anyway huh?... of course, then the interior lights wouldn't go on but who needs them anyway

Where are you going that you need that much light?!!! Just kidding.

I have my front plate and bracket off both cars here in MA, and as long as you don't drive like a clown on a normal basis, I don't think it's a big deal. It's one of those things where you would probably get cited for it if you got stopped for speeding, but I don't think you would get pulled over just because of the lack of a plate.

Just my opinion on the matter. I hate front plates.

Bernie, FYI, I think you will fail the annual MA inspection without the REQUIRED front plate. And what's that cost now, $32?
Someone earlier mentioned using the ON position instead of ACCESSORY. Will this harm the Electrical System at all? Does'nt this energize the Ignition and Fuel Injection systems?

I think I might be confused. This trick STOPS the chime when the key is IN the ignition in the OFF position and door OPEN, but DOESN'T STOP the chime when the key is IN the ignition in the ACC or ON position and the door is OPEN. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong. I can understand wanting to play the radio with the door open and no chime but this trick doesn't fix THAT, but if the ignition is off and the door open then the key doesn't need to be in the ignition. Just take it out. It seems a lot simplier then cutting some wires that could effect other vital components.

PS and YES the Mass State Police will pull you over for not having a front plate. Trust me I know.

OK, I went out to my truck at lunch and tried flipping up the door switch and it does deactivate the buzzer, but you really have to flip it way up into the door - had to use a key to do it. This does turn the buzzer off with the key in the ACC position. My only concern would be forgetting to flip it back down before slamming the door shut and ending up breaking the latch.

I am installing new speakers in my front doors this weekend, so while I have the inside panels off, I will see if I can find a wire to cut and permanently fix the problem.

If anyone else wants to give it a shot before then, go for it!!!

If you cut the wire, you will also loose the dome light when the door is opened.

A better choice would be to install a switch on the driver's side kick panel that will allow you to control the operation of the chime when the door is left open.

On the '01, that would be a BLACK/YELLOW wire at C247.
