Post Truck wont start

A friend of mine has a 2000 F150. He got his hands on an instrument cluster with white faced gauges already installed. When he went to install it in his truck, the theft light would flash and the truck wouldn't start. Does this have anything to do with the chip in the key?? He says that everything else seemed to work okay... just couldn't start the truck. The question is this, can he get this cluster to work so he doesn't have to go through the trouble of installing the white face overlay on his instrument panel? Thought one of you might be able to help.

My guess is it's got something to do with an anti-tampering security system dealing with the mileage of the vehicle. He might have to transfer some part dealing with the odometer from the original panel to the replacement.

Again, this is purely a guess. A call to a friendly dealer's service department would probably get your question answered if you can't wait for a more definitive answer here.

I'm not sure if it has something to do with the odometer because the theft light flashes. One other difference he noted, when the airbag switch is unplugged the airbag light should stay on indicating there is a problem with the system as it does with the original cluster. With the other cluster the airbag light blinks and goes off as if the system is fine. You might have a valid point with the milage thing... but believe it or not, the milage is pretty close... within 1000 miles (higher I think)... we'll see what happens... I'll tell him to check with Ford (as if they'll know)

Thanks.
