Question Programming New Keys?

O.K., stupid me lost my spare key for my 2000 F-150 a few months ago. My owner's manual states that in order to program a new key, you need TWO existing keys. However, I only have ONE key right now, so the owner's manual says that I need to have the dealer program a new SECOND key.

Does anyone know of a way to program a new key if you only have ONE keys to start with?

the owner's manual is correct in that u can only reprogramm and additional key if you have two already programmed keys, you will have to go to the dealer, should be about .5 hr to reprogramm additional key.

Take your checkbook. It's about 60-80 bucks to get it programmed. You might as well get a 3rd one cut while you're there. Then you can program it later and save some money.

Impossible to program a new key with only one original. I've programmed several myself and you must have two keys to program a blank.

Thumbs down

Thanks a bunch for all the replies!!! I can understand the security reason for mandating 2 keys, but it is kind of an inconvenience. I've always carried ONE spare key around, but I guess with this truck, I'll keep TWO spares around instead (just wish I would have known that when I bought the truck).

Thanks again!!!

I was able to get some extra key blanks off ebay for 8.00 a piece. Ended up getting 6 in all at that price, 2 for me and 2 each for my buddies. If you need a spare key this is a cheaper route to look for than dealer cost ones. You will still have to have the dealer program it though with only 1 existing key
We had no problem with programming any of the 6 keys when we got them, all we had to do is get them cut
