Post CB Radio Antennas

I've run searches before to no avail, so here goes... Does anyone have a CB antenna AND a sunroof? I was considering a K-40 permanent mount with the removable coil and whip, but the only place around here that installs them insists on doing it above the dome light.... not possible as I have a sunroof. Does anyone know of a way around this? Suggestions? I'd rather avoid a magna-mount because they always get knocked off, and have to be removed for parking structures, garages, etc.

You would have to drill it your self depending on how much room you have left on the cab after the sunroof ( behind it)

Have you considered a Hood channel mount?

I have one just so I can get it in and out of the carport without getting out of the truck.

Regulator,

Can you tell me where you bought your hood channel mount??? Whats the part #??? Its pretty tight in that channel. Does the mount rub on the hood when opening it??

I'm not sure how far rearward your sunroof extends but... I put a Wilson 1000 through the roof of my truck. The center of the antenna is exactly 23" back from the rear edge of the overhead console. Measured from the other end it's 15" from the center of the antennna to the rear of the truck roof (end of truck roof metal/start of rear window plastic). I don't have a sunroof, I just put it there because it was the apex of the roof's curve and I wanted the antenna to stand straight up without leaning forward or backwards. Not sure how large your sunroof is but in looking at my truck it would appear there is plenty of room forward of my antenna for a sunroof.

It's a power moonroof, so it actually slides back between the headliner and the roof the length of the panel itself. I know it goes back past the light, but I'm not too sure exactly how far past. I might put it near the rear of the cab. I've never seen a Wilson permanent mounted, only magnetic... how does it mount, and can you remove the whip easily (for carports, garages, ATM windows, etc..)??

Yeah, you'd have to measure how far back but there still may be room, with any luck. The Wilson mounts in the same manner as the K40. Drill a 3/4" hole in the roof, put it through, and screw it down with the nut and washer provided. Fairly straight forward install. At least no C clip like the K40, lol.. I always shot those across the garage once or twice before I got it in. I've had K40's on several vehicles and liked them, but the rumor was the Wilson was better so thought I'd try it on this truck and my wife's Jeep. It is not the 1/3rd turn quick release like the K40, it threads on. Takes approximately 3 rotations of the antenna to snug it down. Comes with a little rain cap as well that threads on the same way. Convenient enough and no real pain. As far as it being better than the K40, I gotta say I can't for the life of me seem to tell the difference. I may be getting out a bit farther but that could just be my imagination. Both antenna's are good in my book but I'll probably stick with the Wilson's from now on if only for the lower profile of the base that remains when the antenna is off and stored.

I didn't know the Wilson was rmovable like that... I'll have to check it out... I think the White Wilson would look better on my white truck... still gonna be difficult getting to the roof from somewhere other than the light opening... the headliner material is glued right to the roof/pillars!? Amazing... not real impressed with the install, but it looks nice.

I gave up on finding a permanent mounting place for my antenna! I didn't want to drill holes, so the roof was out. Because of the way the rear window comes out over the bed, between the cab and bed was out...arrrgh! I ended up just putting a k-40 magnet on the roof. You never need to remove the magnet, the antenna just twists off like it does on the permanent mount. This makes it easy to get in and out of my garage, only takes 10 seconds to remove or place.

I had the k-40 Magnet on my 97... ran the wire out the same opening as the third brake light so I could remove it at the end of the lease. The only problem was that all the good car-washes would rip it right off the roof and it would smack into the sliding window and scrape the bejeesus out of the roof, not to mention making me wet my pants! I never had a problem with the permanent mount on my Ranger.... I'll need to get a new one, though, as the magnetic mount I had was black and this truck is white... That's all I need is another antenna sitting around....

I've heard that the performance is about the same from one to the other, so that's not really an issue. I'll probably end up with either the K-40 or the Wilson 1000... just need to wait til profit-sharing for it.

Sounds like you use automatic car washes. GIJoecam,

There is no such thing as a "good" automatic car wash. If they use brushes, all it does is scratch the crap out of your clear coat. If they pressure wash only, they can't get it clean. I have no problems, because my truck is only hand washed. The only time I use a commercial car wash is when I have some mud thrown on my truck, then it is only the self serve pressure wash places (soap and water only, just to knock the mud off).

I am not writing this to rip you, just to inform you. If you really want to prserve the finish on your truck, NEVER use a commercial car wash. Just my .02 worth.

It was a lease I had no intentions of buying... plus, it would also happen when I would forget to remove the antenna before going into a garage or carport. Not a good thing... With the permanent mount it would just flex the antenna itself over.

I use a front fender channel mt. in the winter, and a stake hole mt. in the summer when i take the cap off. I have a 4ft firestick ant. I use a quick release (spring) adapter for easy removal for the garage, car wash ect.
