Post Fuel Gauge

I own a 1997 f150 4.6l 4x4. The fuel gauge has been acting up when the tank is low. I changed the fuel filter and the gauge always reads full. I have to take it in for another recall but was wondering if i could fix it myself and save some cash. Anyone have any ideas?

try disconnecting the wiring plug at the tank. I think that will make the gauge read empty if the trouble is the sending unit in the tank. If that's it, you probably have to drop the tank to replace.

Yes, to replace the sending unit you must drop the tank. Sounds like either the resistance in the sending unit has gone out of spec, or the float arm is sticking. In either case, if you decide to drop the tank yourself, e-mail me and I can give you exact instructions on how to (I used to build the tanks for the trucks here in Dearborn when I first hired in). Could be the guage, so try un-plugging it first... if the gauge goes flat-line, it's the sender. If unplugging it makes no difference, it's the gauge.
