Frustrated in Ga
Hi.....I am posting this for a friend. She has a 2000 XLT Ext. Cab Flareside, power everything. She, in the past month has been having electrical problems. First, her windshield wipers stopped working, and of course it happened on a rainy day (poor her!). Second, her radio will sometimes work then sometimes will not. Ok now, she has problems with the truck starting. She has to keep turning it off, then on, etc and then when she does finally get it started the radio sometimes will not work.
She took it to the dealership and they changed out the wiper motor. Said they couldn't find anything else wrong. So of course when she got it back home, it wouldn't start again. She is getting ready to take it back to Ford again.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had this same problem and could offer any suggestions??
Thanks!

I'v egot a couple of thoughts... but I need more info first... what does it do, exactly? The wiper motor could have been bad... if that doesn't fix it, it could be the switch or the control module.
On the electrical front, what, exactly does it do?? When she turns the key and it doesn't start, is there power at the starter or not? Trace the wires back to the solenoid and battery... the one on the firewall isn't the one she's looking at either... that's the accessory solenoid. There's another one on the side of the starter... could be that the wire on the solenois is loose or not getting juice intermittently... could be a loose connection, bad switch, or bad engine ground... a test light should narrow it down... also, when it doesn't start, turn the key to the start position, and wiggle it, bang on the column, etc... if that helps, it might be the switch. If not, move on with a test light and see....
Let us know what happens.
Any other thoughts, guys?

From other threads I recall some component called a GEM that could be the problem. Also, if the wipers are still intermittent, I'd use Rain-X as a temporary measure that would allow me to drive in a downpour without wipers.
Oh, yeah, forgot about that... there was a TSB (technical service bulletin) for the GEM module... the little control box that controls all the accessories. That could be it... The TSB number is available on the NHTSA web site. Numerous people had this problem.
