Factory Alarm
I just got a 1997 f150. It has a factory alarm (I verified with ford that it was a option on this truck). It goes through the motions of flashing the theft light on the dashboard, but I can not get the alarm to sound when I jiggle the door or shake the truck. I don't want to have break the truck to see if the alarm works. Does anyone know how to test or if there are any settings or switches I don't know about?
TIA

I searched the old posts (Still finding my way around) and found some on the alarm. I have comfirmed that the alarm works by arming and trying to open the door by putting my arm through an open window. Now I wonder if it can be programmed for different modes.
Your post peaked my curiousity, so I looked the info. up on a Ford service manual CD I have for my '98. I relize you have a '97, but the info. is probably similar.
Here it is (I copied and pasted the whole section, there are some references to other sections on the CD, just ignore them):
The ignition lock anti-theft switch (19A438) detects if the ignition key cylinder is broken or "slam pulled" during a theft. The ignition lock anti-theft switch is always monitored by the remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module. This allows the alarm system to be triggered if the ignition lock anti-theft switch detects tampering of the ignition key cylinder (even in the event that the alarm is not active at the time).
Refer to «Section 501-14B» for more details on the keyless entry remote transmitter (15K601).
The door open warning lamp switch (14018) communicates with the RAP module through the generic electronic module (GEM). This input to the RAP module will cause the anti-theft alarm to be sounded if the anti-theft alarm was armed.
The door disarm switches are attached to both the LH and RH lock cylinder. The door disarm switch must be triggered before the mechanical lock unlocks. This prevents the anti-theft alarm from activating when it should have been disarmed.
The RAP module controls the anti-theft system and the keyless entry system. The RAP module communicates with the GEM to request that the interior lights be turned ON/OFF with use of the keyless entry remote transmitter, and the GEM communicates with the RAP module to inform when the door is opened. Refer to «Section 418-00» for inter-module communication.
In addition to the perimeter alarm that uses the door open warning lamp switch, the RAP module also uses the ignition lock anti-theft switch and the autolock/relock feature to prevent theft of the vehicle. For a full description of the autolock/relock system, refer to «Section 501-14B».
The THEFT indicator is found on the instrument panel between the tachometer scale and the needle pivot point. The indicator is illuminated during prearming and flashes when armed or triggered.
Prearming and Arming the System
The system can be armed if the ignition is in the OFF position, the panic alarm is OFF and all doors are closed.
The two ways to prearm the system are to press the lock button on the transmitter or open a door, press the power door lock button, and close the door.
After 30 seconds the system will be armed and the THEFT indicator in the cluster will flash every two seconds.
Disarming an Untriggered System
An armed system will be disarmed with one of these valid actions:
1. Pressing the unlock button on the transmitter.
2. Placing a key in the door and turning to unlock.
3. Turning the key to RUN or ACC.
Triggering the Anti-Theft Alarm
The anti-theft alarm will be triggered if the ignition cylinder is damaged with or without the RAP being armed or a door is opened without disarming the armed RAP module.
The remote transmitter can activate a panic alarm which is similar to an anti-theft alarm, but does not deactivate the starter or cause the THEFT indicator to flash.
Disarming a Triggered System
If the system has been triggered, (the horn sounds, the lights flash, and an external starter interrupt relay is engaged), the system can be disarmed by:
1. Pressing the unlock or panic button on the transmitter.
2. Putting a key in the door and unlocking the door.
3. Turning the ignition to RUN/ACC. (Turning the key to RUN/ACC will not disarm an alarm that has been triggered by the ignition lock anti-theft switch.)

I have a 97 F250 which appears to have the same "factory alarm system", although didn't realize the alarm ever worked before reading this post.
I had bought the truck used and it did not come with a remote key. In fact, it appears that there may have been some sort of alarm system installed at one time but that it may have been partially dismantled. Near the emergency brake, there is a small toggle switch which has it's wires snipped off. Was this part of the original system or possibly an add-on?
One more question.
I was just about to install a remote start system which I just received as a gift. Do I need to deal with this factory alarm system to get it to work or is the alarm mainly for the door locks / entry?

Hi HedgeHog
the add on remote start works fine with the factory alarm. In my case, I modified the factory remote to hook up to the unlock/lock. It would have been easier to use the aftermarket wiring to do this. if your's didn't come with a wiring diagram, I think 12volt.com has them.

Bought it off of a guy selling it on eBay. Think I paid $25 or so for it. It's actually a factory service manual on CD.
Just checked, he's got more of them for sale. They're under "Automotive", just search for "Ford CD" and you'll find them.
The one I got is for all '98 trucks, including F series, Explorer, Ranger, etc.
You can purchase an owner's manual from Helm. I had to, my used '98 didn't come with one. I think their website is
www.helminc.com
Good luck.
