Question No headlights!

My Canadian built 98 F-150 has developed an unusual problem. I’m sure you are aware that the Canadian built trucks have the DRL (Daylight Running Lights). Thank god they do, that’s all that’s working on my truck now.

When I disengage the emergency brake the DRL’s come on. I then turn my headlight switch to the on position and all I get is the parking lights.

The DRL’s are doing the job but not as good as the regular headlights. In fact I noticed this problem when I went over some railroad tracks and they seemed to light up to their normal level momentarily. They haven’t come on since.

The switch seems to be ok because it will lets me know that I have the lights on if I try to open the door with the switch in the on position.

I’m guessing the relay or the DRL wiring harness is to blame. Any thoughts on where I should start looking to fix this problem.

Thanks

I suspect you've got a bad switch or a sticky relay... check the relay first... I believeit's under the hood (if there is one at all....) On some newer vehicles there is a self-resetting circuit breaker in-line somewhere.. this could be bad too. The fact that it seemed to work after you hit the bumps hard indicates a loose connection or sticking relay somewhere. The fact that NEITHER of the headlights works points towards the relay. By the way... not to overlook the obvious, but did you check the fuse? If you find something, be sure and let us know...

By the way.. keep in mind that when you are running on DRLs at night, often times the rear taillights and front parking lights are not operating, just your brake lights. I'm not sure about Fords, but I know most Chevys operate that way...

Also check your fuses. There are two different fuse boxes in our trucks. The one in the cab, and one under the hood, on the fender near the brake booster. Make sure a fuse hasn't blown.
