Cool PHANTOM WIPER FIX

I haven't looked in this section for a while so sorry for this late post. I also had the phantom wiper problem. Decided I was going to replace the wiper stalk and so had nothing to loose taking the one I had apart. The top cap pries off easily and when you remove a small nut, you have access to the internal parts. Problem is some goof at Ford decided to use conducting grease in this thing. Just clean it up (careful not to loose the spring or ball) and reassemble with di-electric grease. Total cost $2. for the grease. Mine has not malfunctioned since. It's been about 9 months.
Have fun...

Cool

Exactly, you have to get all the old grease out of it. It is a conducting type and thus causes a short across the contacts turning on the wipers. Then replace the old grease with non-conducting (di-electric) grease. Thing is, it is really an easy fix. Use Q-tips. Just pay attention to how it comes apart.
Sure beats putting out near a hundred bucks for a new stalk... Have fun...

WLF,
If you're ever crossin' the Midwest, I owe ya a cold one for that advice. Just took it apart and cleaned it, so don't know long term answers on my work yet. Did you pull that circuit looking plate out, too? I didn't, I was afraid to pry into it that far. Anyway, I think I about emptied my washer reservoir playin' with it. I timed the wiper relay at several positions and it is dead on now. Thank you very much!
