Question Where to tie into electrical system?

I wanted to install some daytime running lights. I want to hook them up so that the parking lights arent on while the DRL are on and so I dont have to come through the firewall and use the headlight switch. Is there any place that I can tie into so that when I start the truck they come on? I dont care about a switch. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place to tie into in the engine compartment that only gets power when the engine is running and wouldnt cause a voltage drop and have negative effects if tied into. I think you can tie into the altenator but I think this would give continous power even when engine is off? Does anyone have any ideas or know of a wiring diagram? Im sure I could come into the fuse box and get power there but it seems like it would be a hassle coming thru the firewall unless someone knows of an easy spot. If I had to do this could I tie into the radio since it is only on when the key is turned (I have a aftermarket cd player which may already draw alot of power). Thanks for any help!

In the main fuse panel in the engine compartment, there is a fuse for DRL/Foglights. I'm guessing this is a hot when ignition is on wire. Use a test light to make sure. Assuming this is the case, you could tie into it downstream of the fuse to run your DRLs. Are these light going to be on all of the time, or do you want them off when the headlights are on. If it's the latter, you will need a relay to break the circuit to the DRLs when the headlights are on.

BTW, if it's just a cd reciever, don't be worried about power drain. Most are not much more powerful than the factory units, just cleaner sounding because the internal amps are better. High powered external amps are what use the juice.

If you want through the firewall, there is a big grommet with a little cable beside the brake booster toward the center of the truck. I wouldn't use the radio for control because it's also on in accessory key position. You may look into the ignition or fuel pump circuits in the fuse box under the hood.
