Post Power For Overhead Console

I have a 97 F-150 Reg Cab and am building my own overhead console. I have two cigarette lighter type power outlets and want to tap into the overhead interior lights for power. I will be powering a digital compass and another low power accessory.
Are the power wires heavy enough to handle the load?

I would run 16-18 guage wire from the cig. lighter from the dash, run it to the consual you are building, and yes use a fuse. Good Luck.

Thanks guys. I was hoping to take the dome light down and tap into the wires that power the two map lights. They must have power all the time because they are switched independently of the interior light that comes on when you open the door.
I just need a wee bit of power for my digital compass that can run on internal batteries or a plug in for a cigarette lighter adapter. Can't be much of a power drain (amps).
