Trailer Tow OEM wire harness frustration!
Trailer Tow OEM wire harness frustration!
Here's the deal my 2004 F150 has a 4 flat pigtail coming off the bumper for trailer lights but I want to change over to a 7 round for my trailer brakes. I've been looking everywhere for the OEM wire harness that connects to the factory harness. I've bought 2 different harnesses off "etrailer" and neither of them worked. The issue I'm coming up with is that my stock harness has a round plug and a square plug and both harnesses I've received form etrailer both had 2 square plugs which obviously doesn't work in a round plug. I can't find what I need anywhere! Getting very frustrated any advise or thoughts would be much appreciated.
Can you post some details on your 2004.
Is it a new body style or a 2004 Heritage / lightning model.
Where are you finding these connectors ?
You should have a single connector on the driver's side frame rail, need to drop the spare tire to see it.
( 2001 part number, but the location is valid )

It's a 2004 new style XLT 5.4L.
The picture you posted is exactly what I'm looking at the harness goes from the pigtail upwards and that's where the round connection point is and I also have the other square connection that you can see in your diagram as well as the ground line. The harness that I purchased on line has two square connectors and I need one that has one square and one round.
Any thoughts?

Just as a side note I didn't drop my spare tire if that makes a difference but I don't need to to un connect the factory harness in there now but the one wire is up along the drivers side frame and the round plug is aslo on the drivers side but closer to the bumper like the picture you posted.
Just checked with etrailer, you have the correct harness with the 2 square connectors :
The one you have, you unplug the square from the connector on the frame, plug in the 7 pin adapter from etrailer, and plug what was in the connector on the frame, into the other square connector.
etrailer shows this for your truck

The close up shows it is male & female genders ( factory 4 pin is still wired in the way it is).

The FAQ :
Just need to read the FAQ on the part, easy install.

Trailer Brake Wiring with 7-Way connector on 2004 Ford F-150 SuperCrew, with 4-way from Factory
Question:

The Tow Package Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector, part number, 118247, will plug inline with your existing wiring harness and provide you with the necessary wiring and 7-way connector to install a brake controller. The fuses and relays needed to install the harness are included to make the necessary brake and auxiliary power functions functional. You can retain the 4-way trailer connector and plug the new harness inline with it or remove the 4-way harness if it is no longer needed.
If you need a brake controller the Tekonsha Prodigy, part number 90185-3035P, and Valley Odyssey, part number 52810-V30500 are both excellent brake controllers and come with the vehicle specific adapter to plug into the port under your dash.

Yes I have this exact harness from etrailer right in front of me but what I'm saying is that on of the plugs under my truck is round and both of these on the repacement harness are square. Are you saying that I have to follow the round plug further back to get to the other square plug? I'm kinda confused because your drawing above shows exactly what I have as well as the picture of the harness and one of them is round (in the drawing) and the replacement plugs are both square (in the picture).
A square plug will not plug into a round plug???

You have a square plug ( location is circled in red above ). This is what you are putting the etrailer harness inline with. Don't mess with the round plug, not needed for what you are doing.
As I said above, unplug the square ( and just the square ) connector on the driver's side fame rail by the spare.
Take the gender that will plug into that on the etrailer harness, plug it into the connector on the frame rail.
The other gender on the etrailer harness plugs into what you unplugged from the connector on the frame rail.
That is it, you are done. You are adding the 7 pin round inline with the wiring you have.
Read the FAQ that I quoted, this is an additional harness, not a replacement harness.
