maybe a bad key?

there has been two time that my truck has not started in the in the past two weeks. both times with my wife's key. the first time you crank it it will fire and idle it about 500 rpm for about 2 seconds and die after that it just cranks and no fire. i let it sit for 30 min both times and still nothing. when i let it sit for 2 hour it starts and runs fine. both time it has done it was with my wife's key. do you think it is a bad key? my wife's and my keys are both aftermarket strattec keys but i do have one ford key.

Are you seeing the security light flash? If so then the key could be the issue.

It is not the PATS key.

The RFID in the key is checked against the list of programmed keys in the HEC in the cluster, to check if it is valid.

If it is valid, the message is sent over the multi comm network to the PCM, to signal a valid key, and proceed as normal ( let the engine start ). After this, the PATS verification is out of the loop.

If the key was having an issue, the symptom would be crank no start, with a flashing theft light. ( it would not get to the running at 500 RPM part ).

If you have a door key cut ( non PATS ), put it in the ignition, and hold a PATS key by the ignition cylinder, the truck would still start and run as normal, until you turn it off.

Have you ever cleaned your IAC ? This is what I would think of for the low idle.

why would it start just like nothing was wrong two hours later? i forgot one thing the theft light was blinking real fast about every two seconds when there was no key in it

The blink is the operational status of the PATS system. A visual indicator like a car alarm. That is normal.

Clean the IAC, and test again.
