It should look like this

not trying to hi-jack the thread but you seem like u know what your talkin about I just bought a new bumper and it has the fog lights in it. my truck did not have them to start with. i have a 1997 f150. it also came with the new switch, and the wire harness. but i am confused as to what connects where. i appologize that i do not have the harness in front of me but it looks pretty much like the one above but it has the 2 ends that connect to the lights, and it has the end that connects to the relay (i really was confused as to what it would connect to until i saw this picture) but...it also has a yellow wire with an end with the metal ring and it also has a green/brown stripe wire that is just stripped on the end. where would these 2 connect at?

Thanks for the picture! I do have an aftermarket stereo but it has a little storage space instead of the plastic plate like your switches are mounted to. Maybe down below the HVAC *****?

no mine had a storage place too. i just found a piece of plastic laying around and cut it to fit and drilled holes. the 2 screws allow me to pull that piece off so i can get access to the switches and stuff.
here is a pic of it as i was making it.

I'm not SSCULLY, but it appears to me the leftmost wire with the "tab" on it is a ground wire, which you would attach to any convenient grounding point. The Yellow and Green wires pretty much have to be the 12V supply for the lights and the control line to the switch. If one is heavier than the other, it would be the 12V supply. Otherwise look at the wires going into the relay connector and match up the Yellow and Green ones with the relay taps - the 12V needs to go to pin 30 and the control goes to 85.

I think you'll find the Red wire is coming from 87 on the relay and the Black is from 86.

well thank you very much. i should have been more open about asking for it only being sscully...but i saw that he had the other wire harness so i figured he knew

but thats what i assumed the wires were. but now i have to figure out where to connect those on the switch...am i going to have to splice into my wire harness? i guess i will have to figure more of this out when i get into the truck and take the old switch out.

Kind of hard to tell where the green and yellow ( white ? ) wires go into the relay socket.

If you use this as the basis ( looking into the relay socket ) you can tell which wires are which

The red wire in the relay socket seems to be to terminal 87 ( guess that thisis the same red at the bulb connector ), which means the wire directly across from it should be the fused connection to the battery ( terminal 30 ) That looks to be the green wire, but I cannot be sure with that angle in the picture.

If this is the case, the Yellow wire would be the trigger for the relay, or what you would connect to your switch.

These are complete SWAGs on the colors, without a better angle on the picture of the relay base ( and my guess of the red in the relay socket being the same red at the fog lamp bulb connector ).

ok guys...i feel stupid now if i would have dug deeper into the box, there were instructions from ford on how to install it. so i got it all hooked up and it is amazing how nice it is have those fog lights on the highway at night.

but now i have a second question, hopefully someone knows the answer to...it came with a new switch also. and it has a second "wheel switch" and it says auto lamp...what is that for? is that to turn on my head lights after it gets dark automatically? i didnt know our trucks had that...and being that mine is a 97...will it do anything for me or is it just an extra switch for nothing now? lol

If your truck was equipped with autolamps, I do believe the wheel is used to set the off delay ( amount of time the headlamps stay on after shutting off the key ).

Forget in the 1997 where the autolamp function is for 100% sure.
I would imagine it is more than just a switch change out on a 1997 MY truck

yeah but the kit is for a 1997 specifically. so i thought it was wierd that they would put that switch in there because my old switch only had one wheel that that was the cab light and dash dimmer. unless it is just a generic switch they put in for all the 97-03 maybe...? i played with it and it doesnt seem to do anything.

Yes, the auto lamp selection on the switch is for the lights to turn on automatically when it becomes dark outside. Nothing will happen when you turn it on during the day. Maybe try messing with it at night and see what happens. I would think that the truck would have to be wired for the auto lamps in order for that function to work. And ya, I think that the switch is the same for all 97-03's or relatively close.

'97-'99 use a different switch than the '00-'03, although they appear very similiar in the cab. The wiring plugs are different as well as the way they install in the dash. I don't believe they are interchangeable.

Oh, thanks for the correction. I had no idea. Your profile says that you are from the central coast. Where at exactly? Curious where you wheel, as I am looking for some new trails.

I just bought a switch w/ fog for some lights I'm putting in my XL. I came very close to buying the wrong switch on ebay before I discovered there was a difference.

I currently live in Templeton ... are you from this area? I do most of my off-roading in the Eastern Sierra around Bishop, where I was raised (truely an amazing place w/ almost endless dirt roads ... well worth a visit). In the mid 90's I cruised a lot in the Los Padres National Forest, but I never found much that interested me.
