Compass not coming on & working
Compass not coming on & working
I have a 03 SCREW Lariat 5.4L FX4. It has the electronic automatic climate control. I also have a moon roof (sun roof). Everything works ok. However, the overhead "cluster" that houses the buttons for the moon roof and map lights also contains a screen of sorts that appears to be for the Compass. Owners manual advises you can cut it on and off by hitting the "SELECT" button. I push the select button and nothing happens. I looked for fuses but again everything works on the overhead cluster EXCEPT the compass. Any ideas???????//---DirtySCREW
My first thought would be to remove it and check for cold solder joints, and to make sure the connector is seated correctly.
This would be similar to the odometer blanking, but I am taking a total SWAG with this.
The power to this would be the same hot in run position circuit that overhead uses.

mine did the same thing, i have a 2002 f150 with the digital compass and temperature read out, i went to a scrap yard and tore out out of a truck hoping it would work, luckily it did, they are about 400 bucks new i think i remember reading correctly, try a scrap yard
it may just snap in, mine has a screw right at the front that holds it up, look for that or just try to snap it off

My '01 SCrew had a screw towards the front from the bottom.
In this picture, the plastic mount for the radar detector is installed where the factory screw is at.

Scully---no screw on my 03. It almost looks as if a "panel" pops out thats housed inside of the part thats mounted to the roof. But I don't want to break anything. I'll have to take a pic and let ya'll see what I'm working with--DirtySCREW

My overhead console is held in place with metal spring clips. It does take some force to pull it down. Snaps back into place. I can't find the bad solder joint. If I slightly twist the circuit board, it will light up. What should I expect to pay a salvage yard for a used circuit board?
Compass, 2002 F-150 HD
Like many Ford trucks of yesteryear's my 2002 F-150 HD decided not to show where I am going. It is not big of a deal man newer ask for directions. Right? Intranet search for fix did not gave me an information I was looking for.
And thats what Ive done.
Pulled down on console from the front. Console popped out revealing four metal clips, holding console in place. Console dropped down, hanging on harness (covered with sticky tape goo-gone will clean your fingers). The electrical connector has a lock tab. Pull the harness connector out and remove the console. The green wire connector on the back of compass module is locked - do not try to pull that connector yet. The module secured to the console with three T-15 screws. The cover of the module secured by four plastic tabs and easy to open. Now unlock the green connector from the IC board and remove it. Upon close examination of the board connector pins and soldering, I found that one of the components lost connection with the board. It is a component with 501 number on it.
Using pointed pencil soldering gun, soldering paste (a must!) and an alligator clip (to secure component and dissipate heat) I re-soldered 501 to the board and applied more solder on 501, placed next to it. Everything reinstalled in reverse order. I taped over the sticky tape with surgical dressing. Before I reinstalled console, I installed black door edge trim on both sides of console, leaving front and back with the gaps to allow air inside of the console for ventilation and to prevent overheating in future. I tested the compass re-calibrated.
Do not forget to calibrate compass to your region.
Cheers.
