parking shift ignition swich issue

I have a 2001 Expo i have some kind of **** park issue because you have to either shift in to neutral or pull back on the shifter and kinda slame it into park to start and some times it will just start like normal. What gives i think it has some thing to do with that spring in the needle and help would be great

If there is slop in the shifter mechanism linkage, check the Torx-head screws under the column. They work loose.

Quit slamming the shift lever around or you will break either the lever or the bushings in the shifter tube.

If the Expy is anything like my f150 (and it may not be) there is a DTR sensor on the transmission that senses when you are in Park or Neutral. It probably needs to be replaced. Look for it where the shift linkage enters the transmission.
