The instrument cluster transmission gear indicator has a couple of tabs underneath it that hold it to the instrument cluster. You can feel the tabs move when you press against them ( they move left and right ). I pull down on one side while compressing the tab. You know you have done it correctly when the gear indicator slides down a bit. Then I do the other side.
Re-installation is simple. Align the gear indicator and simply slide it up until it snaps in.

More Kudos for Greg. I bought the a 99 f 150 a month ago with this problem. Probably saved a lot of money on it 'cause it's hard to sell to a stranger with no readable odometer. Took it apart at 5pm tonite KY time), drove it at 7pm. Thanks for the tips, don't know if I would have found it, not being visible to the naked eye.
Thanks again

A few more questions
I found this forum today on the odemeter, My 2002 Ford Explorer odometer has now gone completely out. By what i have read in this forum the repair seems easy. My husband has no experiance in this and am hoping he can fix the problem himself and save us a lot of money. If someone is willing to, can some one email me the step by step instructions from beginning to end on how to do this so i can give them to my husband. I know i am asking alot of someone. If nothing else i can get some brownie points from him and maybe a dinner too. It would be deeply appreciated.
If someone has any additional pictures that may help, that would be great also.

Hello, Can you please let me know what part/parts you bought to resolve your issue
Hello There,
I have a 1999 F150 and I have the same problem with my odometer and I can not figure out what the problem is. I came across this web site and saw that you had the problem I am explaining. Can you please let me know what part/parts you purchased to resolve your issue and the steps you took.
Thank you & Regards,
Mark

Awesome fix. Thanks for all the tips, especially regarding the light switch removal trick. Wouldn't have ever thought of that one. $15.00 for a soldering pen and some rosin core solder and odometer works like it used to. About an hour of my time and one burn on my fnger and all is well!

Great fix for odometer!!
This was a fantastic step by step fix for the problem. My odometer had been going in and out for a few years now, and the fix took around 2-3 hours. The rightmost peg on mine was the culprit, just as in the illustration. It has been fixed for 3 weeks now. Be sure to read the thread on the removal of the headlight switch, it is pretty cool and worked perfect. Thanks for this great post (5 years later!!)
