Angry Check Fuelcap Warning

idk if this is in the right section but my "check fuelcap" warning keeps coming on and I don't understand why. Everytime it comes on I check the fuel cap and nothing is wrong...

Any ideas?

Probalby not sealing properly. Get a new one from Ford...aftermarket could give you the same problem

Before you do anything drastic, make sure whenever you put it on, to tighten it until it clicks. When I first got my truck I wouldnt tighten it 'til it clicked, only to where it was tight. Because of this my check engine light would come on at random times, usually when I would hit the speed bumps in my HS parking lot.

And either disconnect the battery, clear the CEL code, or you'll need to drive about 3 drive cycles to clear the code.
The gas cap on my 97 started giving me problems about 3 years ago and pretty much failed a little over a year ago. I bought a new one at O'reilly's for about $10.00 and so far it's working great.
And I agree with kansasflareside, no older than your truck is the gas cap is probably just not properly twisted on. Unscrew it and take it off, then put it back on, push down and turn. It should go about 1/8 of a turn and click softly.

I figure you can read the directions on the cap, so I won't point that out.

Don't be surprised if it has failed, I failed my first EPA inspection( on my 2001 ), due to the gas cap not passing the vac and hold test. I think that was at the 3rd year.

clear code like was mentioned and make sure the cap is tight and has clicked.

if your still having problems, you may have a small leak in the evap system. after all you have put it through the mud a few times, i dont know if there was anything in the mud that may have compromised a seal but it is possible.
