To update the cluster with the correct info, the dealer has to send it to the authorized Ford programming centers.

I am trying to recall on the '04+ MY trucks, think it is the same as the 99-03 MYs, the HEC contains the PATS key codes, and if you put the complete cluster in, your truck will not start ( unless you have a key from the other cluster, and hold this next to the ign, and use a plain key to start the truck ).

In short, not going to be cheap with programming the millage, and having it reprogrammed with the as built data, and the keys erased, and 2 programmed.

SSCULLY, do you have any idea if the aftermarket gauge clusters I've seen people talk about on the Appearance Forum require all this PATS key reprogramming stuff? Or, are they more of a "surface" application that retains the "guts" of the old cluster? Somehow, they look like pretty complete units to me.

The ones that I have seen are overlay replacements. pull the indicators off, overlay the new gauge, then put the needles back on ( this is why there are a few posts on gauge reading off asking about placement of the needles ).

Makes sense, thanks SSCULLY. I was mostly just curious - not planning to replace my gauges.
