Ignition Switch Issues

I have a 2003 Ford F-150. Last night when I shut the ignition off, the ignition switch stayed in the "accessory" position. when I tried to start the engine, the switch wouldn't have the recoil feel like it should as you were to start the engine, as a matter of fact, the engine won't start with the key. We replaced the ignition lock cylinder thinking that this was the problem; it didn't resolve the problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I've had this happen to me to...it keeps happening, I have to keep messing with it, finally, about a day later, it works...did you ever get yours fixed?

Tom: I Just took my truck down today to the Ford dealers for diagnostics and this is what they came up with:

Need New Ignition cylinder ($99.00) and Clock spring ($64.99) and $127 for 1.7 hrs labor. I came come to check on prices at Napa auto. Ignition cylinder ($59.00) and they can’t get the clock spring, dealer item only, I guess...but I found out a couple of things:

Napa calls the ignition cylinder an “ignition lock cylinder” just like jwp32750 mentioned in his forum input which I’m sure you’ve read….

Also… at the junkyard, the guy told me that the clock spring used in the steering column is what’s used in the timing release of the airbags, but, if damaged, could cause the battery drain.

One last note…my blinkers worked fine until I read your article, after that, they didn’t work at all. When I went downtown a few days ago, still not working. On the way to the dealer’s today, still nothing. When I left the dealers, still nothing. I stopped to get some bread, and when I got back in the truck and made a turn, they are both working again…(sighs).

Mike,

The blinkers could be a loose connector for the MFS. You can either dive right into taking the steering wheel cover off, or try tilting the steering wheel up or down, to see if it cures the problem ( some have made note that this helps it to work ).

The wiring some times will bind up and start to pull the connector apart. after time the pins will corrode from having a poor connection, and stop working all together.
Not un heard of, to have happen on any of the older MY trucks.

Mike,

Forgot to look up the prices on www.oemfordparts.com

The Ign switch w/ tilt :
Ignition switch - W/tilt wheel - W/tilt wheel
Years :97-04
MRSP: $37.22
OEM's price : $19.93

Clock spring ( don't think you need this for an ign switch problem ) is a call for price item. You do have to take apart the steering wheel, and I do believe remove the airbag to get to it, I have never done one, and stay away from them myself.

For $20 + S/H it might be worth getting a new ign switch from an online parts place. Here is a thread on removing the ign switch to stop the key in ign beeping. JMC explains removing the ign switch
