Over running.

its back on my mind again, since i started the trans swap (issues galore, see sig if your not familiar and are interested in the saga) i have had what i was told is an over run issue.

i can shut the truck off after its up to op temp, it will continue to run for 2 secs roughly before it stumbles to 500rpm then dies. all the while the keys in the off position, also noticed tonight as it did it again, some of the lights stay on dimly like my CEL (EGR code and rear O2.) for a sec as well.

any pointers, past experiences or anything would be appreciated.

I'm surprised you're getting this issue. It used to be a problem with older, carbureted engines when they started using leaner fuel mixtures for reduced emissions. I haven't heard much about this in fuel injected engines.

The problem is called "dieseling" and it's due to fuel being ignited by the heat in the cylinders in spite of the fact that you've shut off the spark. One way we used to kill this was to simply step on the gas to flood it. You might also try stopping the engine while it's in gear (which loads the engine a bit more so that it is idling a bit slower to begin with at shutdown). I wonder if your idle speed is set a bit too high?

Actually though, I thought the fuel injectors were supposed to shut off with your key in the OFF position. Maybe I'm wrong on this though.

Your problem has nothing to do with the transmission however, and, it's not really harmful, just annoying.

perhaps its just simply im running too rich still. i never have had the chance to dyno run this motor for troyer to work on the tuning.

I doubt it would diesel if it were running rich. It would probably quit right away.

my wideband screams 12 and lower all the time at idle.

still randomly doing this issue. noticing my gauges still have power and flickers a good 2-3 sec after keys off.

nobody ever had this issue?

one thing im curious of since this happens with or without tuning and on both my pcm's, perhaps a relay is failing?

bump. ongoing issue, truck still runs after key is off for several seconds.

when the key is off there is still power running my gauges, my radio cuts out but my gauges are still running, oem and aftermarket.

That changes what I would have thought.

Sounds like a problem with the Ign switch. If the gauges are still running after you shut the key off, I would guess the circuit is still on ( hot in run ) and that is what is leaving the truck running.

That is just my guess.

With it being a 1997, it is easy enough to test, no PATS to contend with. Get one from a bone yard maybe ?

hmm maybe, i do remember some pink wire or odd girly color wire being damaged and removed from that area. the problem is its intermittent. might do it twice in a row if im lucky to recreate the symptoms.

i'll see if i can find the time to tear apart the column some. didnt like the first time, the horn blew at me lol.

thinking back upon my own actions now...

during the motor swap, i stole key on power from under the disty box before a particular relay. if it sounds fruitful to anyone i could look at figure out what circuit i tapped into. although im not sure how that would cause a problem.

Depends on why you did that. If the circuit has the ability to have power come back to the CJB, then yes it can cause a problem.

What did you take that power for ?
