Dead Battery

Yesterday on my way home I turned on my headlights as it was not dark enough for them to come on automatically. Well like a dummy I forgot to turn them off. When I went in to the garage this morning to start my truck the battery was dead. I thought that there was a timeout as far as how long the lights would stay on after the ignition was turned off. Is there a failsafe or not? Do the keys have to be out of the ignition?

There is not any type of time delay if you manually put the headlight **** to the on position with/with out the key in the ignition. Your last warning is the loud annoying chime.
