02 Keys???? PATS????

I just got an 02 supercrew with the Antitheft system and I was wondering what is the deal with the keys. How do they work? I know they have to be programmed but i see them for sale on eBay. The actual ford keys. I can’t find them cheaper than $35 in town.

How do you program them to run with my truck? Do they just program to whatever key code your keys are?

If you have two working keys, you can program more yourself after they have been cut. See your owner's manual.

If you have only one, you are at the mercy of the dealer or a well-equipped locksmith.

The lock smith I went to has as PATS duplicator machine with programmable keys. They read the one you have, and burn the same RFID tag into the new one. This works for starting the truck, but it is not a 2nd key for programming another one ( same RFID tag on both ).
Some locksmiths have the PTS programmer, so they can do the same thing as the dealer with erasing and programming the keys, it is just a PATS programmer, not a full blown NGS / WDS machine.

Be careful if you have the orignal and the "duplicated" key on the same keyring. The system may ping both of them (depending how close the second key is) and cause a no-start. Keep them on separate keyrings.

My post to the thread had nothing to do with keeping 2 keys on the same key chain, but now that you bring it up, this is a well documented item from Ford.

Ford states that anything RFID should not be on the same keychain, or any where near the PATS antenna when starting the truck. This includes another key or even a speed pass, or building entry fob.
