multifunction switch?????
multifunction switch?????
Ok i have no brake lights, 3rd brake light or trailer brakes. The tail lights works and so do the turn signals. the dealership says it the multifunction switch. is this something i can change out my self? does any one have any info to help me out. i did a search on multifunctions switch and couldnt find what i was looking for. please help asap!
Try the fuse or fuses that maybe blew. Multifunction switches are expensive, often hard to get at and expensive (worth mentioning). I would see about the brake switch that would turn them on. Should be connected or on the pedal swing arm somewhere.
maybe try a different dealer too, the one u went to doesnt know to much.
You may want to make a more permanent repair there. A "plier squeeze" fix tells me they didn't do a good job in the first place and while you've made it better, it's still a weak connection. At least though, if the problem returns, you know where it's at.
Good bit of troubleshooting!
I agree with O2SC4x4 too - the MFS controls the turn signals, hazard warning and high/low headlights. It has nothing to do with the brakes. A different dealership might be a good idea.

Did the dealer diagnose this or just guess at the most common thing? Like mentioned already, check your fuses, check the stop lamp switch for power in and (when depressed) 12 volts out. If you have a good stop lamp switch and you bulbs are all good (as evidenced by working turn signals) chances are good the problem is in the mF switch, could just be the connector though, it's common for them to break or come loose.
06 F150 multifunction switch is about $36.00 ... I know it wasn't the problem but figured I'd throw that out there.....

Actually it has everything to do with the brake lights. It's how you have one bulb for turn signals and brake lights, a bad MF switch will affect the stop lamps. Check a wiring diagram. Can you do it? Yes, all you need to do is remove the steering column shroud and remove two T-20 screws. That said, the shroud is a Royal PITA as part of it extends to under the steering wheel, it can be done without removing the steering wheel, it's just a pain.

As an aside though, I took the shroud off when I spliced into some of the wires when I installed my DRL module. As I recall, a couple of them went to wires from the MFS. I got the shroud off without pulling the wheel, but then I had to go buy a wheel puller to get the wheel off for clearance to get the shroud back on. I was a "nervous nellie" when I took off and reinstalled the air bag! And, of course, I had the battery disconnected, but still....

Whoops, my bad, I meant it is an expensive part to be assuming needs replacing. I understand the functions of what it does also.
How much for a 2000, dealer cost me around $130 cdn.
Upon reflection, I can see you can easily be right. I am working off a "less than complete" diagram in a Haynes manual. Nothing about the brake lights in this diagram. :o So, now I am "humbled". Thanks for reminding me I don't know everything.
