door chime with key OUT!

I have a new to me 1998 f150. The problem is the door chimes go on the minute you open the drivers door (not passenger). Doesn't matter if the key is in the ignition or not. Drives you nuts fast. Help!

The ignition switch is a "switch". If it is somehow stuck in the "key inserted" state, you'll get the chime. You could pull the fuse that controls the chime if it doesn't disable something else that you want. Or, you could try to replace the ignition switch.

I'm really not seeing anything else that could be the cause.

And, pardon me! Welcome to the forum! If you don't have an owner's manual (that tells you what each fuse controls and where they are), you can get one here for free: https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenan...ls/default.asp

Sounds like the wire for the "Key in ignition" alarm is grounded. If you pull the plastic cover off of the steering column you should be able to find a small wire that is connected to the ignition switch, check that wire and make sure it isnt pinched against any metal parts.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

We have the winner (almost).

Black/purple wire. It connects to the switch. The switch itself has probably failed and is continuously grounded.

I've made a habit of just clipping the wire on my trucks...

Great solution, unless you have a nasty habit of leaving your keys in the ignition (and then locking the doors)! :o

Yup! :o (Or VERY carefully hidden keys where you can't see them - up among the black widow spiders we have in Tucson).

I have the same issue plus my door marker light won’t shut off when the door is closed. At least I found out what was draining my battery
