Keep Blowing OD Fuse
Keep Blowing OD Fuse
I have a 2002 F150 SuperCrew w/ a 5.4
I had some issues recently with the radio noise capacitors shutting down my electrical system and preventing me from starting the truck. I bypassed them for awhile but have replaced them and they are working fine.
My newest problem is that I keep blowing my overdrive fuse when I put the truck into park. I was able to start the truck and change the fuse and the OD off worked fine for towing. I just had to replace the fuse everytime I started again. Now the fuse blows right away. Any Ideas?

Take off the plastic around the steering column and I'm sure you will find that the wire is broken where it comes out of the shifter and it has gone from shorting some of the time to all of the time. (Probably has broken completely and is laying on something metal causing it to blow the fuse.) The wires going to the switch on the shifter are very thin and fragile and this has happened to many ford trucks. Hopefully there is enough wire sticking out to repair it. If not the shifter can be replaced and it will come with new wiring and it just plugs in. It's not that difficult to change out either. Remove a few screws holding the plastic together, remove the ignition key switch, pull pin holding shifter on and either repair or replace.
It goes only to the computer. The computer then controls the tranny via a different wiring harness.
Pull the column shrouds and you'll find the above description will be the case.

More than likely it's the same problem. It's very common and not very hard to fix. Be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the key cylinder and doing any repairs to keep from shorting anything out. If want or need to do it differently, you can just order a new shifter with everything new on it and replace it as a whole. The wires to the overdrive button have a connector on top of the steering wheel to pull apart and one pin holds the shifter in place. Very simple to replace if it comes to that.
