Replacing Over-drive lockout switch

The **** on the end of the trans. select lever has been broken in the middle and re-glued too many times, and besides.... IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP!! The O/D lockout light no longer comes on so I'm figuring that it's toast as well. Previous inquiries have reported that the WHOLE slelect lever must be replaced... so be it! The parts are on order and I started looking around to see what was involved to get into the steering column... it doesn't look encouraging. Where do I start and how much of the dash do I have take apart to get to this select lever?
