gauge cluster swap

my 98 v6 5sp has the cluster without the tach and all the automatic ones i see have a tach, i realy would like a tach but i want it to look factory at the same time, does anyone kno if a new cluster with a tach in it already will work and just hook up to the wires already there or will i have to run new wires to make the tack work rite

The tach will hook up and work. I just did this on my 01 f150... But it is not simple to do... you need an actual ford scan tool... you will probably have to take the truck to a ford dealer to get it done because you have to reprogram the cluster to match the pcm, then you have to program the keys to match the cluster. It took me a full day to figure out how to do this properly with my dad's help who worked for ford for 12 years.

If the vehicle is PATS-equipped, the cluster and the PCM MUST match each other programming-wise, otherwise, the vehicle security system is activated and the PCM disables the system That's why the dealer resource is needed.

Technically, you program the keys INTO the cluster/PCM combo, the keys themselves are not programmable.
