Emergency Flashers/ Turn Signals failure

I have a 2000 Expedition with 101,000 miles on it. First the emergency flashers stopped working. A few weeks later my turn signals would intermitently stop working. Now the only wat they work is if i grab the switch for the emergency flashers and pull on it. They work for a minute then go out again. When they stop working I hear a clicking behind the dash. I am hoping the problem is only a bad switch for the emergency flashers. I've been reading on the electrical problems caused by leaking windshields and am hoping that is not my problem. I haven't been experiencing all the other electrical problems people have been describing associated with th eleaking windshields so hopefully that is not my problem. Any help from anybody with experience with the turn signal/emergency flasher problem would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

I would check all the bulbs, and the flasher itself.

I checked the fuse. Where would the flaher be? If it were the flasher why would the turn signals work when i pull on the switch for the emergency flashers?

From: highlands ranch, co
turn signal switch is bad- had same problems

new "multi function switch" will run about $80.00

you can do it your self, but you have to remove ign. key cylinder to get the plastic shroud off of the stearing columb then it's just a connector and some screws

Thanks for the help. I'm pretty confident i can do it my self, but I've never taken out the ignition. Is that difficult? This site is awesome.
