Please help.....

so i want to start off by saying thanks for all the great info on this site its great. i have a 2004 f150 4x2 4.6l its the new body style. so my battery has been giving me cr@p for awhile now it hasnt been holding its charge its the original battery for the truck. so i had a brand new battery lying around from a prject truck we were working on so i replaced the one it had with the new one and worked fine for about an hour then all of a sudden the check engine light came out and then later that night the truck just turned off on me it started up back fine but dont know why. its kind of weird i see the rpms moving alot like if it wants to die. do you think i should put the same battery the truck came with? or maybe my alternator any help would be great. thanks.

Could be a few things with the CEL.

The procedure that I have always followed after disconnecting ( replacing in your case ) a battery ( and can cause some debate ) is to let the truck idle for about 3 min, and then complete 2 drive cycles to start the PCM relearn process.

This is for ODB-II specific, not CAN Bus, but it worth a try to see if the truck will act better. The only reason I suggest this, is the comment about the idle speed acting like it wants to die. This is what my 2001 would do if I did not follow the procedure after disconnecting the battery.

Don't be concerned with the readings, just follow the procedure as close as you can ( steady throttle, avoid sharp turns, etc ).

Once you complete this, if you still have a CEL, then it is time to get it read, and post the actual code here ( autozone will just say something like O2 sensor, just ask for the actual code )
