Unhappy speedometer troubles

2006 F150 Screw FX4 Today everything started fine. Then while my truck was sitting, off, I noticed that the speedo was stuck at 80mph. I turned it on and it increased as the speed of the truck increased so it read 110 when I was doing about 30. Each time I shut it off, it goes a little lower, but stays stuck. It is currently stuck at like 55 when the truck is off. WTF is going on? The odometer still works, as does the tach. I have changed nothing in the vehicle electronics. It has the factory Audiophile, etc. Any input would be a big help as the truck now has 38000 miles and I don't know if the dealership will help me out on this one...

Sounds like the needle came loose from the shaft & is slipping. If you're still under warranty, you can get a whole new cluster for just your deductible. If not, you can pull the cluster lens off, turn the key to RUN (so the speedo shaft goes to 0mph), and then push the needle back on at 0. If that doesn't work, start shopping eBay or the junkyards, or mail off your cluster to someone who repairs them.

just kept driving and...

It fixed it self. I am not sure what the hell happened, but it now reads like it should. Each time I stopped it would move down a little further until it finally reset itself to 0, anyone else had this problem?

Shop your local junkyards, but it might require reprogramming to get any replacement cluster to work. If you want a service disk, e-mail me.

sweep gauges worked for a while

I used the "sweep gauges" technique with success a couple times. It would simply reset the speedo and all was well. Now however, it just quit working altogether. If I try the sweep gauges, the needle still sweeps the entire gauge, telling me that the gauge still works, but it won't display speed at all. I was thinking it must pick of a speed signal from a sensor. Anyone know where the speedometer sensor is on a 2006 f150 Screw FX4 ? Since the gauge works during sweep, I must assume it is a short in the wiring or the sensor gave up the ghost? Input please? Any Ford Techs seen this problem before? Odometer still works BTW
