2000 F150 4x4 Clicking NEED HELP NOW
Hi I am in needed of help I have a 2000 F150 4x4 4.6 and I need to know where the starter is located as I think that it is frozen. I have power to all my gauges, light etc. but it clicks when i turn it over and everything was working perfectly this morning. I have been plowing snow all morning and I think that when I shut the truck off it froze up.. I need help asap. Anyone with any help at all let me know. Thanks Jonathan
If I understand what you are looking for, it is on the pass side firewall, with the 2 large "battery cable" sized cables attached to it.
One of the cables is to the battery, the other to the starter.
There should be a Tan w/ Red stripe wire to the coil that is fed from the DTR ( Digital Transmission Range ) Sensor. This is the power from the truck to close the Normally Open Contacts on the starter motor relay to provide high AMP power to the starter from the 2 fuseable links ( 2 Gray 12 AWG links in parallel ).
If you turn the key to the start position, and have someone with a meter check for voltage on this wire, they should have 12+ on the meter while cranking. A piece of wire into the cab of the truck, and a known good ground for the other side of the meter / test light would work for solo checking.
Remember park, parking brake, and don't stand in front of the truck when you try this ( sorry I have to say it, just in case, not to imply or lead you to infer I think you are dumb ).
The truck assy / items still having power is a good sign that the common lug for the Battery Junction box is still OK. So either it is the starter itself, or the starter motor relay, or maybe the DTR lead ( the DTR is on the side of the trans ). I will try to locate Steve's posts in a thread on this.
Let us know if this gets the answer to your question.

Found Steve's posts with some info on the DTR.

If you need it, here is some pictures of the DTR, if you find no voltage at the Tan w/ Red stripe wire.
The other thing ( don't know if you checked this ) is to check the cables at the starter end. I have seen a few posts on corroded wires at the starter end, but I don't recall if it exhibited the same symptoms as your post.

Bad starter solenoid?
Something thing to try would be having someone tap the starter solenoid with a hammer, while you try starting it. (in park, safety first)
I had the same thing happen, just clicked when turning the key, and this is what got mine to start, then drove to the shop and installed a new starter.
Good Luck!
