Unhappy Keyless Entry/Power Locks Ghost

Just recently I've noticed the interior/cargo lights going off and on in the truck. In addition, the doors keep locking. Once everything is locked and i'm walking away from the truck, or even standing out front i'll hear the locks clicking and the interior/cargo lights coming on. Just as if I was continuously hitting the lock button on the remote.

The Keyless entry buttons no longer seem to work, other than one button - basically if hitting 3 of the 4 buttons, nothing happens. Hit the one, the interior lights come on as if i was entering the code.

This morning the battery was dead so this problem has progressed enough to warrant a panic! I don't want to be out on the job somewhere and not have my truck start.

I think it has something to do with crapped out buttons on the keyless entry keypad - as of now I pulled the power lock fuse to stop it from wearing down the battery any more.

Quick update/note

A friend of mine suggested replacing the remote battery. His car when the battery was low locked by itself - didn't work. Well, it isn't locking by itself, so maybe that half of the problem is solved.

Entering the code into the keypad does nothing, just pressing the buttons does nothing - it's basically just looping on for a minute, out for a second or two, then on again for a minute - WITH the interior/cargo lights on and off as well. Before, one button when pressed caused it to light up and the other three not, now none of them have any effect.. just on and off, on and off.

I'm convincing myself it's just a broken keypad!! hah, I'll check out ebay or a few local parts stores.

Well ok then!

Since I'm talking to just me, here's the latest! Last evening, I picked up a nail on the jobsite and had a friend bring over the plug inserting tool as mine was in my wife's truck. Since he was there, I threw the power locks fuse back in to show the boys what's been happening with my pride and joy.

It never blinked, or acted up once (of course!). SO, not being the brightest star in the sky, I opted to leave the fuse in, the keypad is finally shot and dah well.. at least i got's the remote and power locks. Today at the jobsite, the stinkin thing came to life and locked itself with the key still in the ignition. We never remove the keys on the job in case another trade may need to move it to do whatever they need to do or to offload something.

A good thing my wife worked 10 kilometers away and was able to come with the spare key..

As fast as i could open the door, the hood was up and out come the fuse again. I priced keypads at about $80 CAD...might just as well leave it unhooked, although, man, power locks are sweet - especially when you're reaching back in your supercrew to pull up the lock on the back door!

Lightbulb The ghost revealed

It most certainly was the keyless entry keypad. I finally found enough get-up-and-go to remove the door panel and take a peek.

Inside the keypad there was that pretty teal greenish colour of corroding copper. the circutboard exhibited the same and the copper pathways the keys touched were basically corroded away.

SOOO.. I got's out the wire cutters and snipped em all off, put electrical tape on the ends and threw it all back together. Whether or not I replace the keypad is another story - it's handy when the keys are locked in the truck I suppose, but, meh.. dunno.

Let it be a warning though for the keyless entry keypad toting dudes like yours truly - take care when washing and spraying. If water get's in there you'll end up with a phantom door locker to annoy you for a while!

I haven't had time to frequent the forums a lot lately. Kinda late now however, I was able to disasemble my keypad and clean it all out. It wasn't working when I got my truck, used last year. It works great now.

Post It was corroded too much

Unfortunately for me there was just too much corrosion - those little copper trails just weren't there for the button to touch when pressed.

All is well and back to normal now though - one of these days I'll come across another keypad and replace it just to have everything working again.

It's the best vehicle I've ever owned! Hands down... The only other ford I had was an E150 Club Wagon (for work) and thought it too was tough as nails.
