aux reverse backup lighting.
aux reverse backup lighting.
Been kickin' the idea of a mod to actually be able to see in reverse at night. Finally gonna get around to it and chronicle it here...
Basicly power comes from a new circuit (be sure to use a fuse), is switched on and off across pins 30 and 87 on the relay, then directly to the new lights.
What triggers the relay is power to pin 86, through the coil, then to ground through pin 85.
Here is how I'm gonna do it. Tapping from the stock reverse wire, whenever the tranny switch sends power to the lights, it will also send power to pin 86 on the relay, switching on the new lights. Also, a toggle switch from a 12v line to pin 86 will trigger the lights on. As a side benefit, the 12v from the new switch also backfeeds the stock lights and turns them on too.

Napa has the relay for 5 bucks and this neat pigtail harness that is color coded which I also labeled on the diagram.

Looky whats on sale now for 10bucks at harbor freight.

I was suprized how heavy they were. Not too cheezy at all.

I'm not to sure on the wiring diagram, I like to put my fuses first. And where can I hire the qualified service tech?

Anyway, this is what I'm thinkin to do under the '88 first. I'll have to be more careful backin' over snow drifts, but I think it'll be purdy safe up there.

Thought it would look cool right on either side of the receiver on the diesel, but that would be hard to hook the safety chains up then. Not too sure 'bout hangin' em way out on either side.

What took you so long?
Been running them for 3 years now.
#10 wire thru a 30 amp fuse at the battery back to the rear relay and switched off the backup lite lead.
I use the same lead to a 4 pin socket to power a light duty wench to pull the sprint car into the trailer without help.
If the battery ever goes dead and locks the doors, I can repower and charge the battery from the rear socket, run small inverter etc..
