SES light has no juice
SES light has no juice
While getting my emissions checked today, it was pointed out that my SES light doesn't come on. The other lights in the panel (seatbelt, gas cap, e-brake, etc) flash for a second when the truck starts, but no SES light. I never noticed. Ideas?
BTW, my truck failed the emissions test. When I bought the truck a year ago, the gas cap light was on. I didn't care too much and replaced the stock cap with a locking cap. The light stayed on. I still didn't care. When I went in for the test I asked the guy if that light would affect the test. He said it wouldn't. It did. My truck failed because of three codes stored in the computer, all related to the gas cap, and because my SES light doesn't work. When I got home I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes. The gas cap light didn't come back on during the 60 miles I drove today.
So am I looking at a bulb replacement or maybe a fuse for the SES light?

It's not that simple.
The SES lamp is driven by a seperate micro processor in the dash assembly that gets it's signal from the engine computer (PCM).
The first test is to do the dash diagnostics to see if the problem shows on that testing.
It may be as simple as a lamp replacment so try that to.
Respectfully, the truck has been designed to monitor and provide failure information as a matter that is to be taken somewhat serious and not try to get around it or ignore the faults.
As you found out, the inspection station won't let all this pass so it pays the same to fix it now or fix it later by being forced to do it.
With an SES not working or even on all the time, you don't know when other faults are present unless a scan is done from the port under the dash.
Good luck.
