1992 F150 Ignition harness short?

I posted last week about disarming the alarm after the vehicle wouldn't activate ignition1 (pump, wipers, instruments) when I re-assembled the column replacing the shift tube. Intially I thought the problem was this box I disconnected under the dash. I didn't know what I was and took it to Planet Ford and they said it was an alarm and to disconnect the battery to reset it and all should work. It turns out that I racked my brain for 5 days trying to figure out why this "alarm" shut me down. Then last night I was on a sight that discribed my "alarm" as an older model Ford "cruise control amp." This box had nothing to do with anything except for the cruise - it clearly indicated the wiring - ignition, brake, accel, resume, speed - two hardnesses 8 pin and 6 pin. Thank you Planet Ford parts guy, eh. Then I read a post of how there may be a short between the harness and the fuse box. I did squish the red/grn wire from that harness when I was putting the column back and the wire was flattened, possibly grounding the thing and shorting it. I cut out the squished part of the wire and reconnected it but still no ignition1. Then I read a post of a similar problem and the guy ran some hot wires from a hot point to the harness itself and he had a running truck. So 4 am I went out there and tapped into that wire that was squished with a hot from the fuse box. ignition1 activated and the truck fired up till I released the hot wire. Then when I tried to do it again, although ignition1 was engaged, it didn't fire up. I was informed that the switch may have fried do to the squished wire and I replaced it this morning. Still no ignition1 without the hot wire but no fire. I am strapped financially right now and trying to avoid dealship fees at a dealer that told me that my cruise amp was an alarm. Anybody have a wiring diagram for the 1992 F150 so I might try to understand this better? I wanted to get a code reader but having no luck. 3 parts places that loaned them or sold them don't have the 92 type. Even Walmart had the 96 and up readers. I would swing for the CD for this truck but would like to get one locally as cheap as the $5 ones I have seen on Ebay. For now I would be satisfied with hotwiring the thing to let me seek work.

In a bind,

Rick

Runs

After I posted this I went out and messed with it again. It does start and run now, I just wasn't releasing the starter. Something is still screwy with it because I only runs with the red/grn wire tapped hot. Any suggestions, and many many thanks for your great advice.

When you shorted that wire to ground by pinching it, you burned out either an underhood Maxi-fuse (driver's side), or a fusible link wire at the starter relay. If it's not a Maxi-fuse, you need to a) identify which fusible link is burned by inspecting them closely for blistering (or pull to see which one will stretch), b) find out what gauge (size) it is, c) buy a new one at any parts store, & d) replace it following the instructions on the package precisely.

Or take it to a pro.

A Haynes manual (PN 36058 w/light blue cover) would do you a world of good.

Cool Thanks

The advise you give for this circumstance is about what I thought, too. You are just too cool for helping us F150 Enthusiasts. Is the CD Manual just as good?

The CD is much more detailed than Haynes, and can be had for ~1/2 the price. E-mail me if you need one.

BTW
You'll find a lot more info specific to pre-'97 trucks on FSB.
