problem with a mirror switch
problem with a mirror switch
i have replaced the entire group of switches on the driver's side on my 2000 f150 supercab. The left mirror works fine, but the right one does not.
is there a way to test to see if the switch is bad or it's something else?

If one works, and the other one does not, it is from the connector C511 to the mirror itself.
Q1. Did the mirror work before you replaced the switch, or is that the reason you did the parts swap ?
This is the 2001 EVTM on power mirrors:

If you look at the diagram, you can see where the switch function itself is the same for both, just changes which mirror it goes to with the L-off-R switch.
If you take the switch panel back out, you can test with an Ohm meter if the L-off-R switch is functioning.
Remove the connector C511, select the Left mirror, and check with an Ohm meter from where the Orange w/ Light Green stripe comes in ( pin not noted in the diagram ) to the Dark Blue wire location. This is the up down wire for the left mirror. One direction there will be an open, the other 0 Ohms ( DC motor reverses polarity to reverse the motor direction ).
Once you know which is power to the Dark Blue wire ( up or down ), switch the meter lead on the Dark Blue wire location to the Violet wire, and select the Right meter on the L-Off-R switch.
This is the up /down for the right mirror. Use the same direction that got the reading 0 Ohms, and see if you get a 0 Ohms reading again.
If so, the problem is in the harness to the mirror, if not, seems like the L-off-R switch is bad ( don't know why it would be on 2 switches ).
The other option is to use the connector to the mirror, apply +12 V to the Violet wire, and ground to the Yellow wire. This should make the mirror move in one direction ( up or down ). If not, time to take the Right mirror off the truck, and check from there into the mirror motor itself.
One other question, was the right mirror off for some reason ? If so, it might not be hooked up on the right door sail panel area ???

I did what SScully suggesed and it looked like the switch. I noticed the switch came apart. Just insert somthing small at each of the locking points and pry out. I notticed 3 small squares on the smaller half that doesn't have the controls attached found they are contact areas and they looked kinda dirty. I used contact cleaner and scrapped them with and xacto blade. I also pryed up on the 3 springs on the other half just a little to give them a little more spring. sprayed whole switch again with contact cleaner moving the right left up down switch back and forth. Snapped the switch back together and reinstalled it. Now I have side mirrors that work without spending a dime.
