Noob 95 E150 check engine, airbag, OD light questions...
Hi all,
I just bought my first Ford, a 95 E150 V8. I have previously owned mostly Dodges, so forgive me if I seem a bit retarded. The van has some interesting "issues". The CEL comes on periodically, mostly on the highway, but then goes out. I have not yet retrieved the code for this, I just did a search to see how.
The Air Bag light also appears to be blinking "44", and the OD light blinks steadily. The OD works fine, and the shifts don't seem to be harsh. The previous owner claimed he had the trans serviced, but I question the competence of his mechanic based on some of the "repairs" I have found on the van.
Some other problems are, the temp guage, fuel gauge (reads full all the time) and radio are not working. Everything else seems to be OK, although when I turn the key on, neither the ABS or Brake light come on (most of my dodges would blink them to show they were working), so I am not sure if the bulbs are burned out? I did have the cluster out and replaced some of the obviously burned out bulbs (CEL bulb was missing!), but I could have missed some. The van also gets about 10mpg, so I am hoping the CEL is an O2 sensor code. Is it possible that some of these symptoms are related? Since I am not familiar with Fords, I thought I would see if any of these were common or possibly related before I go and reinvent the wheel figuring it out. I will be pulling my codes as soon as it stops raining to see if that sheds light on anything. Thanks for any input, and thanks for your patience, as I know some of these are FAQ level questions. I will keep hammering through the searches to see if I can get up to speed....

Welcome aboard!
Lot of stuff there, I'll see if I can hit most of it.
Pull codes. Paperclip. www.fordfuelinjection.com
O/D light means there are transmission-related codes stored.. Codes should post in previous step.
Airbag 44: RH FRONT AIR BAG SENSOR AND BRACKET NOT MOUNTED TO VEHICLE PROPERLY
Temp guage: Possible sender/wiring/guage
Fuel guage: Same
ABS and BRAKE lights SHOULD come on at prove-out. Possible ignition switch fault or more.
O2 sensor problems can definitely cause poor fuel economy. Post your codes for assistance before buying any parts as most "codes" are not definitive.
Also, see what engine you have. There are several V8s avaialable.
You'd really benefit from a copy of the factory service CD. You can find bootlegs on ebay or you can download via bittorrent from wwwdotfordcdsdotcom (subject to available "servers").

Thanks for the info. I will get some codes and report back. I am a bit confused about the OD light... Am I correct in understanding that it signals codes from the EEC that relate to drivetrain (whereas "engine" related codes are signaled through the CEL) but the drivetrain codes may not be picked up by a generic code reader? I am assuming since I have a 95, it is NOT OBDII compliant. I really don't like the idea of having to take the truck to a Ford dealer so they can read the codes. Unfortunatley I am technologically stunted, and although I have heard of a bittorrent, I am not sure what to do with one, LOL.
