Help with Install

Hello folks

I am installing an active (fan attached) transmission cooler and need some wiring help. I need to find a switched ignition source capable of running the fan. Where is a good switched 12v source? All help is appreciated - thanks.

1. You are only going to find a hot in run postion circuit for activating a relay, to run the trans cooler, not for running the fan itself.

2. There are a few ways around this, but the easiest I found was the Black with a red strip in the steering column. It is a 12 AWG wire, that is hot in the run postion. This is what I used as the trigger for my FAL fan controller on my '10 SCrew.

Thanks for the reply SSCULLY! I think that is what I am going to do. I can power the fan from that wire - is this correct? Thanks again.

No you cannot power the FAN from that wire.

You can power a relay that is powered from the battery through the relay, to the fan.

I just don't want any confusion in this, if you hook the fan directly to that, you will blow a fuse, and your truck will not run. Worse case, you might cause damage to the factory harness, and not be able to start / run your truck.

Thanks again SSCULLY. I am currently looking for a 12v relay to power the fan. I am hooking the fan to the battery through the relay. I am going to use the switched signal wire going to my radiator electrical fans to "trigger" the relay to close.

Can you just buy a 12v power relay?

Thanks again.

Jeff,

You can find them at any Napa, AutoZone, part plus, etc.

Just check what the draw is on the fan unit, to buy the correct size ( 20, 30 or 40 AMPs ).

Good luck.

Jeff,

What cooler/fan are you using? Had you considered just adding a fan to the existing factory tranny cooler?

I am considering adding a fan to the factory tranny cooler in my 05 F150. I am trying to bring down the tranny oil temp when towing up long grades. It has risen to 215 F on a hot day going up a long hill.

This is not going to help a whole lot in the long run.

For ~ $240.00, it is best to get a stacked plate remote cooler, and an electric fan, with the temp probe and controller for it.

Placing a fan on the so-so efficent factory trans cooler, is just a bandaid on the problem, not a cure for it.

Something like this is best :
