auto door locks

auto door locks

do any of ya know how to disable the auto locks on an 01 f150.ya know the ones that lock automatically when you put it in gear.it's annoying and i'de like it to stop.also is there an easier way to turn off the abs light on the dash then pullin the light bulb.i just unhooked the plug to the pump under the hood.

To disable the autolock feature, look in your Owner's Manual. There's a bit of a mating dance required, but it takes all of 2 minutes. As for "disabling" your ABS light, you do realize that it's glowing for a reason don't you? That's Ford's way of telling you that your braking system is now compromised. Translation: You won't be able to stop the way the truck was designed too. Or, said another way, you run the risk of running into something - or somebody. I doubt anybody (sane) here will take the bait and answer that one.

I might not be sane, but I'll take a stab at how tot turn it off.

Take it to the dealer, they will make it go out for you, albeit for a slight charge.

The ABS system is a different diag connector then the ODB-II one ( it is by the hood latch on the '01 if memory serves me correctly ) and it a different piece of test gear, that you won't get at Autozone.

First rain / snow that you need to do a panic stop, you might wish you had gotten it fixed, along with the car/truck/utility pole that you run into.

You hit it right on the head Steve. Making the indicator of the problem go away isn't the same thing as making the problem go away. Now about that nagging Low Oil Pressure warning light...

the ABS light may be because of the speed sensors on the wheel hub. they are magnetic and when rust sticks to them it will throw a code.

just a quick way you might be able to fix it yourself.


How To Disable AutoLocks

The enable/disable mode allows the autolock feature to be turned off and on. On manual transmission vehicles, when replacing the remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module, the autolock feature must be turned off by using the enable/disable mode.

The enable/disable mode is entered when the following series of steps is performed:

1. Confirm that the perimeter alarm is disarmed.

2. Close all doors.

3. Confirm that the ignition switch is in the OFF position.

Note: Steps 4 through 8 must be performed within 30 seconds.

4. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN.

5. Press the power door lock UNLOCK button three times.

6. Turn the ignition switch from RUN to OFF.

7. Press the power door lock UNLOCK button three times.

8. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN.

9. Verify that the RAP module chirps the horn. This indicates that the RAP module is now in the enable/disable mode and ready to accept program changes.

10. Press the power door lock UNLOCK button one time to command the RAP module to toggle the autolock/relock feature ON or OFF.

11. Press the power door lock LOCK button once to enter the command.

12. Verify that the vehicle horn chirps one time to signal the RAP module confirmation of the command. There should only be one chirp indicating that the autolock/relock feature has been disabled. If one chirp is heard, followed by a longer honk, the autolock/relock feature has just been enabled. Return to step 10.

13. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position to exit the enable/disable mode.

14. Verify that the RAP module chirps the horn once to indicate that a feature has been changed.

The autolock and the appropriate alarm configuration are turned on at the factory on vehicles with automatic transmissions. Vehicles with manual transmissions have the autolock turned off at the factory. The RAP module returns to the prior setting any time battery power is interrupted

thanks for the info on the autolocks,it gets pretty annoying goin back and forth and since i usually leave my keys in the truck,i'm always afraid of it lockin me out.the abs light is on because i unplugged the box.i don't like that sensation of the brakes gettin away from you and i also think i know how to drive and stop better then my truck does.

Think what you want, but I guarantee that you can't. There are only two situations in which a non-abs equipped vehicle will stop faster than an ABS-equipped vehicle: Deep soft snow, and deep loose gravel. In all other circumstances, an ABS-equipped vehicle will always stop faster than the same vehicle without ABS.

Furthermore, ABS allows you to retain steering control in a panic situation where a locked-up set of wheels will plow you right into the object you're trying to avoid. Hence, the mantra: Stomp, Stay, and Steer. Stomp on the pedal, Stay there, and Steer around the object. There's no way to do that consistently without ABS.

We won't even talk about the insurance liability you assume when your insurance company finds out you disabled a safety feature....

I took my car to the dealer, and a tech came out with a laptop sized computer that he plugged in under my dash, and disabled the auto locks in about 1 minute. He has other user parameters that he could have changed, but this was the only thing that annoyed me.

i apriciate the help and all,but i'm not a fool.i just don't trust it.i feel like i have more control coming off the breaks and into the throttle when i don't have abs.also seems like the abs kick in a lot sooner then my truck will lock up.i drive about four or five cars down a dirt and stone trail thru the woods every day (testin tranies at work,junkyard)and it always seems to me that i have more control without it.i mean just because it tests better and is better for the average driver,doesn't me it suits my driving style.isn't front wheel drive safer then rear wheel,i don't know about you but i can drive a lot safer with rear wheel drive.
